Why are annual physicals important?

An annual physical gives you an important snapshot of your health. It can help Sara and the team notice trends in your health and any variations that could indicate a health problem.

Even if you feel well, you may have an underlying health condition that doesn't have outward symptoms. These include such issues as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, or Type 2 diabetes.

Your annual physical keeps your health records current. If you have a chronic condition, like arthritis or heart disease, regular physicals ensure your current treatment plan is working to manage your health and prevent unnecessary complications.

What happens during annual physicals? 

Wesleyan Urgent Care customizes your physical to your age, gender, and current health. It usually includes simple tests and screenings.

The exam usually starts with gathering your basic health stats — such as blood pressure, height, weight, temperature, and oxygen saturation level. 

The team then updates your medical history. If you have any questions or concerns about your health, be sure to discuss this with the team. You’ll also discuss your basic lifestyle habits that could affect your health, such as smoking, alcohol consumption, or diet and exercise. 

The examination part of your physical begins with an evaluation of your heart and lungs with a stethoscope. Sara and the team check your thyroid, look at your muscle tone and reflexes, and evaluate your eyes, ears, and nose with a magnifying instrument.  

If they find anything concerning, they may recommend additional tests beyond basic bloodwork and a urinalysis. This is also the time to make sure you’re up-to-date on routine screenings, such as a mammogram or colonoscopy.

What should I expect after a physical exam?

Sara and the team discuss with you any identified risk factors for disease that they have found. In addition, they offer ways in which you can change your lifestyle to maintain good health.

The team also fills out any paperwork you bring in for official physicals needed for school or work.
